Diplomat, great traveler, Gobineau shows himself a passionate admirer of Eastern civilizations: ‘I know very well that when I return to Europe, I will mourn Asia for the rest of my life,’ he wrote. These short stories are not simple travelogues: they vary the points of view, which are sometimes of a European narrator, sometimes of an Oriental, sometimes of the hero himself. Exploration of space, poetic inventory of places, anecdotes: the irony of the storyteller mingles with lyricism, picturesque observations with comic features. Gobineau, the last great romantic, composed Modern Thousand and One Nights.
