Chartres Municipal Council Meeting: New Hours, Renovations, and Twinning with Bethlehem

It is now a habit: the Chartres municipal council, Thursday evening November 16, 2023, was peppered with political battles between the majority of the mayor, Jean-Pierre Gorges, and his main opponents: the elected officials of Chartres Ecologie. Jacqueline Marre (Chartres on the left) presented the mayor, at the end of the session, with a petition to put an end to the experimentation of new hours at the media library.

Novo Nordisk Extension

The City will sell the municipal technical center (CTM), located rue Edmond-Poillot, to the company Novo Nordisk, which wishes to expand its activities. Municipal employees will be relocated to the former site of the Maflow France company, avenue Gustave-Eiffel.

The municipality will buy this real estate complex at a price of 10.5 million euros. Part of the premises, already rented, will remain so. Rents bring in €395,965 per month. As for the sale price of the CTM, the Domaines estimated it at 6.25 million euros. “But nothing prevents us from selling more expensively, we will look,” commented Jean-Pierre Gorges.

New hours at the Museum of Fine Arts

The municipal council voted unanimously to modify the internal regulations of the Museum of Fine Arts. The collections are now open to the public, one more day, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as on Sunday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with an evening on Thursday until ‘at 20 hours. The museum remains closed on Mondays.

Renovation of facades

As part of the facade renovation operation in the heart of the city, elected officials unanimously approved the payment of subsidies for owners who have carried out work: €7,614 for the building at 2-4, rue de la Clouterie, €12,060 for that at 36, rue du Soleil-d’Or and €47,125 for 10, rue des Grenets.

Rigeard leisure center

Dominique Dutartre, deputy mayor in charge of school affairs and early childhood, presented the 2022 annual report for childhood and youth activities. The closure of the Rigeard site, in Grands-Prés, this summer, forced the municipality to modify the organization of childcare.

“Fifty-four more places were opened in July and August in the three primary schools (Les Cytises in Rechèvres, Jacques-Prévert in La Madeleine and Jules-Ferry in Comtesses) which finally welcomed the children,” specifies Dominique Dutartre.

“This has reduced transport times, everyone is satisfied.”

Quentin Guillemain (Chartres Ecologie) asked what the future of the Grands-Prés site would be. “It’s the leisure center building that is closed, not the rest,” replied Jean-Pierre Gorges. “I’m not going to reopen the building, but we can offer something different, with multi-uses.”

Twinning with Bethlehem

The city of Chartres has been twinned with Bethlehem, a West Bank city managed by the Palestinian authority, since 1994. Jacqueline Marre (Chartres on the left) asked how relations with Bethlehem stood and “how can we show our friendship to this city today ?In these terrible times, we cannot forget him.”

Patrick Géroudet, municipal councilor responsible for promoting the city, confirmed that very strong links existed between Chartres and Bethlehem. “We are the first French city to have gone there after the Intifada and I am in regular contact with the mayor.”

Chartres twinning: the goal is to “bring beautiful encounters to life”

A trip was planned there in January 2024 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the twinning. The mayor canceled it. “During this period, we must remain calm, the context is complicated,” he explained. “I don’t want to force a city council to take a position on this type of problem. Everyone has their own opinion.”
