Charles III will not participate in the climate summit in Egypt

The Sunday Times reported Saturday night that King Charles III will not attend COP27, scheduled for November in Egypt, after Prime Minister Liz Truss opposed his participation.

The new environmental advocate, who just succeeded her mother, Elizabeth II, had planned to speak at this climate summit (6-18 November), according to the British newspaper.

But Truss thwarted and challenged his intentions during a personal meeting with the king at Buckingham Palace in September.

The information comes at a delicate time for the prime minister, who took office less than a month ago, as the country is in turmoil over his budget announcements.

Some fear that Truss may renege on his climate change commitments.

The presentation of a bill last week to amend or repeal hundreds of environmental protection laws inherited from the European Union by the end of 2023 was the last straw.

The Terrace government also includes many ministers who are skeptical of the issue of carbon neutrality, as foreseen by the Paris Agreement.

According to the “Sunday Times”, the premier will not be present at the “Cup 27” in Sharm el-Sheikh.

The newly formed Truss government includes a number of ministers who have expressed doubts about the so-called “zero” goal in 2050, while Truss is considered more enthusiastic about this policy than his predecessor, Boris Johnson.

The Sunday Times said it was unlikely he would attend the “27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change” in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Britain hosted the latest climate summit in the Scottish city of Glasgow. Charles, the late queen and her son William spoke at the event.

The British government and Buckingham Palace refused to comment on the newspaper’s information, which indicated that this incident would “likely fuel tension” between the king and the prime minister.

Interestingly, all official overseas visits to members of the royal family in Britain take place on the advice of the government.
