Charles de Foucauld, future saint, passed through the Côte-d’Or

Charles de Foucauld was not born in Côte-d’Or but he had very strong links with Dijon and the department of Côte-d’Or where his sister lived who also owned the castle of Barbirey-sur-Ouche. The baptism of Charles de Blic, his godson, took place on September 8, 1887 in the church Saint-Michel of Dijon. The signature of the future Saint can be found in the parish registers.

Why will Charles de Foucauld become a saint?

The miracle happened far from home. This is the incredible story of a young carpenter from Saumur (Maine-et-Loire), survivor in 2016 of a fall of 15 meters from which he emerged unscathed, despite an abdomen pierced through and through by a piece of wood from a bench. Conscious, he could be treated at the university hospital of Angers. He came out without a fracture, without any damage to any vital organ.

The scene took place during restoration work on the institution’s chapel Saint Louis, a Catholic high school. The victim’s name is Charle, without s, and his occupational accident, which could have cost him his life, occurred on the exact day of the centenary of Charles de Foucauld’s death.

Canonized by the end of 2021

The Vatican commissioned a theological investigation to relate what the Church considers a miracle. After consulting the medical profession, it established that only « an exceptional chance » saved Charle, the carpenter. The latter’s boss, François Asselin, is a practicing Catholic, a member of the parish of Saumur Charles-de-Foucauld, where the accident occurred. All these investigations led to the conclusion that there would have been intercession of the late Charles de Foucauld with God. Charles de Foucauld is one of the seven personalities that Pope Francis intends to canonize by the end of the year. He was declared “blessed” in 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI.

  • To talk about it, we receive this Friday May 14 in the morning of France Bleu Bourgogne from 7:30 am Father Emmanuel Pic, parish priest of the diocese of Dijon and connoisseur of the life of this man.
