The Channel One Cup is a commercial figure skating tournament. The competition will be attended by two teams, whose captains have been appointed Olympic champion Alina Zagitova and two-time world champion Evgenia Medvedeva.

The prize fund of the tournament is 10 million rubles, provided by the organizers – the Russian Figure Skating Federation and Channel One. One of the goals of the Cup is to give competitive practice to leading Russian figure skaters in the face of the cancellation of the World Championship. At the same time, the tournament is not official – its results should not affect the formation of the Russian national team and the selection of figure skaters for other starts from the FFKKR calendar.

Figure Skating Channel One Cup: dates and venue

The tournament is scheduled for 5, 6 and 7 February at the Megasport Ice Palace in Moscow. A jumping festival and a draw are scheduled for 5 February. The short program will be skated on February 6, the free skate will be skated on February 7. The start time for the short and free programs is 17.00 Moscow time.

Channel One Cup: competition format

In the announcement press release it is said that the best team will be determined by the total amount of points that athletes will gain in the short and free programs. Judging will be carried out by certified judges according to the current ISU system. Closer to the beginning of the tournament, clarifications may appear, since there are no uniform ISU rules for team competitions. In addition to their athletic performance, the skaters will compete for the Audience Award. Spectator voting will be held live on Channel One.

Regarding the jumping festival, which has never been held at this level before, there is only unofficial information that it will consist of three rounds. First, each team makes four different jumps. Then each participant will complete their most difficult jump. And in the third round, each skater will perform a cascade of five jumps. All this will be judged by the judges, among whom the famous coach Tatiana Tarasova is expected. The Jumping Festival will be held in the “battle of the sexes” format – a team of girls against a team of boys.

Channel One Cup: tournament favorites

Most likely, the team will be in a better situation, which will get Alexandra Stepanova / Ivan Bukin, as well as Anna Shcherbakova, into its ranks. These skaters are likely to win in their disciplines, and if they are drawn to the same team, this team will receive a serious handicap.

Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva do not plan to compete, but they promise to perform with demonstration numbers during the draw. The role of the captains in the tournament is largely formal, although, given the difficult relations between Zagitova and Medvedeva in the past, their confrontation, even in this capacity, arouses the interest of a huge army of fans of each of the skaters.
