The ITA said it aims to complete a program of re-analysis of Sochi samples before the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

“Following questions about the manipulation of the doping control process at the Sochi Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has already tested hundreds of Russian athletes in 2016,” the agency said.

“The ITA will now extend its re-analysis program to all nations and sports that participated in the Games, and will primarily re-test more than half of all samples collected,” the report said.

According to the World Anti-Doping Code, samples may be stored for up to ten years after initial analysis, and they retain the same legal force so that they can be re-examined and the perpetrators brought to justice.

The ITA stated that intensified anti-doping research in various sports and recent analytical advances, “particularly with regard to steroid and hormone detection”, will allow it to identify hitherto undetected doping violations “that may have occurred at the Sochi Games”.

The ITA emphasizes that a re-analysis of the samples collected during the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games has so far revealed more than 130 anti-doping rule violations, “clearly emphasizing the effectiveness of such a program in detecting and deterring fraud in the future”.

The IOC was established by the IOC and the International Doping Agency (WADA) in 2018. It operates as an independent organization that runs anti-doping programs for more than 45 international federations and major event organizers.
