Challenges Faced by Yamaha in MotoGP: Learning from the Past for Future Success

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Repsol Honda is not the only one who is experiencing difficult moments like what he is currently experiencing with Marc Marquez. Yamaha has also experienced that, including its flagship racer at that time, Valentino Rossi. Therefore, the difficulties experienced Yamaha nothing new lately.

World champion MotoGP 2021 Fabio Quartararo be a part of Monster Energy Yamaha in 2022 on a contract until 2024. However, Quartarto has struggled this season and is still tied for ninth. Meanwhile his teammate Franco Morbidelli slipped to 11th place.

Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli said Yamaha was currently experiencing difficult times again. The difficulties he is experiencing now are the same as in the era of Rossi and Mavercik Vinales. He admits that his rivals are much better at making big jumps.

“It’s strange to see three European factories on top and two [produsen] Japan is having a hard time. Of course we have to take steps to change the working method. We are working,” said Meregalli, quoted from CrashAhad (16/7/2023).

According to him, his team must be able to unite the expertise of Japanese and European people if they want to outperform their rivals. He admitted that he was trying to do it. He hopes the results can be seen in the near future, although not even this year.

Yamaha is synonymous with the glory years of Valentino Rossi who presented four premier class world titles. However, Yamaha apologized to Rossi after 25 races without a win between 2017 and 2018. This season has also been bleak for Yamaha.

“For sure, this has been a completely different start to the season than we expected. We did some good winter testing, where we were satisfied with all the work done in Japan,” he said.

Nevertheless, Meregalli admitted that he had learned many things, including how to easily turn the motorbike tomorrow. He said Yamaha only focused on increasing downforce and speed. He also admitted weak in aerodynamics.

“We have to do the best with what we have until the next race, we have to be ready, with the team we have, to take advantage of the problems that other people have, like what happened in Austin. When there is an opportunity, it is not always achieved because our riders are always forced to push themselves to the limit and that makes you make mistakes,” he said.
