Center Party sees no need to contest Tallinn mayoral election

Kalle Klandorf, chairman of the Center Party group of the Tallinn City Council, does not see any need to fight against the election of the mayor of Tallinn, who succeeded only on the third attempt on Sunday.

According to Klandorf, the Local Government Organization Act does not specify the number of attempts to elect a mayor, as it says the procedure for electing a mayor should be specified in the by-laws of the city. “You can choose while, as they say, white smoke starts coming,” Klandorf told BNS. “Tallinn council has the right to establish its own election procedure. There are not so many times written there. Under normal circumstances, the mayor would not have been elected,” he said. “This quad is an unusual tie. History has shown that nothing will come of it.”

According to Klandorf, it would be a waste of time to be against the results of the mayor’s election, although the Center Party group will discuss the matter on Monday night. “And it wouldn’t change anything if all actions are allowed.” A court challenge will take some time. After that time, when the court makes a decision, the term of office of the deputies ends, they only have a year and a half to do that,” said Klandorf. It has been in Tallinn council since 2005, but he doesn’t remember anything like what happened on Sunday in the previous council.

Social Democrat Jevgeni Ossinovski received 38 votes in the first round of voting in the Tallinn City Council on Sunday and was not elected. In the second round of voting, Ossinovski received the support of 39 deputies. Only on the third attempt, Ossinovski collected 41 votes in the 79-member Tallinn council and was elected.
