CD Projekt Red Grows Witcher Game Development Team to Over 400 Employees, Production Phase Imminent

Two-thirds of CD Projekt are currently working on the next Witcher game, codenamed Polaris. As it turned out during the publisher’s fiscal year 2023 earnings call, the development team now has 403 employees.

CEO Michal Nowakowski explained that after the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the number of employees working on this game was reduced to 17 people, and the rest were distributed among other projects.

“The Polaris team, on the other hand, has grown to over 400 developers,” Nowakowski said, “reaching the target size to move into production. This is planned for the second half of the year.”

The team working on The Witcher spin-off Project Sirius, led by The Molasses Flood, has remained unchanged in size since CD Projekt’s last update and still numbers just under 40 employees.

Back in January, CD Projekt CEO Adam Badowski expressed hope that the production phase of the fourth mainline Witcher game, Polaris, would begin this year. Last May, CD Projekt confirmed that it had completed the research phase of the game, which would be the first part of a new trilogy, and had moved into pre-production.

Last November, the company said that nearly 330 developers were working on the project, making it CD Projekt’s largest development team. “We would like to have about 400 people working on the project by mid-year“, Badowski said then, and now that goal has been achieved.
