Castellón City Council and Generalitat Work on TRAM Extension to Beach without Disrupting Traffic: A New Approach to Public Transportation

The continuity of the flagship project of the PP in the Castellón City Council during several terms, the TRAM, faces a mandate for changes after the left-wing governments in the Generalitat. With the arrival of Salomé Pradas at the head of the Department of Infrastructure and the determination of Begoña Carrasco to provide the capital with a means of public transport with connection to the beach and not only to the Grao, the two administrations are already working again to dust off the technical studies of the past to continue his urban itinerary until the Jaume I University.

The idea that the City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana are working on contemplates the extension of the line to the beach but without invading the circulation space of beach users. The City Council and the Department cannot include more elements in an area usually saturated with traffic in summer due to the concentration of vehicles.

In this way, the proposal analyzed by the City Council and the Generalitat contemplates that the TRAM from the urban area reaches Grao and can be directed along Ferrandis Salvador Avenue to the area where the Golf hotel and the military residence are located. of officers as more representative buildings, as well as other hotels or hospitality spaces in the vicinity.

That will be the final point of the TRAM extension to the beach. In addition to the large volume of traffic in the area and the absence of sufficient space for the incorporation of an exclusive lane for the guided bus throughout the coastal corridor, there are other reasons to explain the approach of the Generalitat and the Castellón City Council.

Specifically, the beach area is going to undergo extensive remodeling with financing from European funds. This rearrangement of the area leaves out the TRAM to avoid saturation in the area. In addition, the City Council wants to prioritize the Gurugú area for pedestrians in the reform.

In this way, this aspiration is aligned with the concept of a TRAM to the Aeroclub area so that users can enter from that point at a point on the beach with preference for pedestrians.

The development of the TRAM expansion has required a change of political color in the City Council and the Generalitat to abandon a long period of eight years of hibernation. The left was always critical of the TRAM for understanding it as a renewed version of the trolleybus, far from its preference for the tram like the one that circulates in Valencia or Alicante.

In fact, during the time of Ximo Puig as president of the Generalitat, the Valencian government decided to freeze the extension of the TRAM to the beach that the PP always defended. In addition to this, he also spoke in favor of the withdrawal of the electrification structure such as the one that exists in many points of the itinerary to opt for completely electric vehicles without the need to use the catenary.

Precisely that is the line that the TRAM points to in its extension to the Aeroclub area. The current availability on the market of a fleet of electric coaches makes it possible to redesign a part of Ferrandis Salvador Avenue without the need to introduce the catenary network.

With this starting point to expand the service currently provided by the TRAM, the great advantage that the Castellón City Council observes is comfort for the user. When the infrastructure is built and the electric bus circulates through the area, travelers will not need to make transfers to access the beach from inside the TRAM, a situation that does not currently occur.
