Cases are still on the rise in 67 countries and 43 are close to peak, global balance indicates – Executive Digest

New Covid-19 cases are still on the rise in 67 countries worldwide and 43 are close to the peak of infection, according to the agency’s global tracker Reuters. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 56,212,000 infections and 1,347,000 deaths from the new coronavirus have been reported.

Taking into account the average number of cases in the last seven days, the five countries in the world that report the highest number of new daily infections are, in order, the United States (more than 161 thousand cases per day), India (with 39, 2 thousand), Italy (34.8 thousand), France (28.5 thousand) and Brazil (28.2 thousand).

The countries that have registered the highest number of deaths by covid-19, per day, are the USA (1237), Italy (609), France (595), Brazil (583) and finally India (494). The average of cases is also referent to the last seven days.

Covid-19 hit some countries harder than others, although differences in the way infections are counted and reported locally make it difficult to make a perfect comparison between countries.

According to the company’s case tracker Reuters, there are 43 countries that are still close to the peak of infection and there are others that are already at their peak in terms of the number of cases. Second, the agency’s balance sheet, Portugal is one of the countries that will already be at its peak because it has never had so many infections. However, this does not mean that cases cannot increase further.

A Reuters assigns a percentage to the peak of each country, to give an idea of how far it is from containing the spread of the virus in relation to the worst days of the outbreak. In this sense, Portugal is already above 90%, which means that the country is registering its highest daily average of infections.

Since the start of the pandemic, Europe has recorded at least 14,652,000 cases and 336,000 deaths. The European countries that have reported the highest number of new infections and deaths are Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Russia and Poland, respectively.
