Carrefour Removes PepsiCo Products from Shelves Due to Unacceptable Price Increases

Jan 4, 2024 at 9:04 PM Update: 5 hours ago

Supermarket giant Carrefour is removing all products from PepsiCo, the company behind Pepsi, from its shelves. The French supermarket chain calls the soft drink company’s recent price increases unacceptable.

Carrefour is one of the largest supermarket chains in Europe. In addition to France, it has branches in Belgium, Italy and Spain. PepsiCo products are being removed from the shelves in all 9,000 locations.

In addition to Pepsi, this includes the soft drinks 7up and Gatorade, chips from Lay’s and Doritos, and various types of breakfast cereals. French supermarkets already have signs announcing that products will not be returned if the shelves are empty.

PepsiCo said in a response that it has been in discussions with Carrefour for months and that it wants to continue that way. “We are hopeful that our products will remain available,” the company said in a statement.

The US company announced “modest” price increases last October to tackle inflation. In addition, Pepsi has reduced the packaging of their products, while the price remained the same.

To combat inflation, the French government has asked traders and suppliers to make price agreements in January. That is two months earlier than normal.
