In the A69 file, Carole Delga committed to supporting the establishment of “working groups” involving opponents of the highway but did not comment on a possible suspension of the construction site during mediation.

The day after the meeting in Paris between opponents of the A69 this Wednesday, October 4, representatives of the office of the Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, Carole Delga was in favor of the mediation requested by the collective La Voie est libre et the National Tree Monitoring Group. “I am committed to supporting the Ministry of Transport, decision-maker and grantor of the motorway, in setting up working groups bringing together the two groups in order to share developments, on the one hand, on environmental compensation, and on the other hand, on pricing for the user,” announced the president of the Occitanie Region on Tuesday in a press release.

While expressing “her serious concern about the state of health” of the fifteen opponents currently on hunger strike, Carole Delga did not comment on a possible suspension of the highway construction site during this mediation. However, it is only on this condition that the strikers have until now planned to stop their action.

In response to the many voices raised to denounce the prices of the future motorway, of €17 round trip, the President of the Region announced the establishment of “express coach services on the A69, at low prices and zero emissions.” This connection, complementary to other services, would be provided thanks to hydrogen coaches currently being manufactured in Tarn, in Albi. Beyond the A69, which according to her remains the only “credible alternative to open up the 150,000 inhabitants of the south of Tarn”, Carole Delga pleads for a “legislative evolution on major national infrastructure projects”. “It is also a lesson that we must learn collectively, it is now a question of moving towards a legislative evolution regarding the deadlines, which are far too long, for the completion of major projects and the investigation of possible administrative and judicial appeals”, she explained, asking for “the opening of parliamentary and governmental work”.

Scientists “in rebellion”

Opponents of the A69, who are calling for a new rally this evening in Toulouse, have not yet commented on Carole Delga’s proposals. For their part, 1,500 scientists called on Emmanuel Macron, this Tuesday in an open letter published by L’Obs, to “abandon the anachronistic project of building a highway between Toulouse and Castres”.

Among these scientists “in rebellion”, several contributors to the IPCC reports, including the climatologist Christophe Cassou and the paleoclimatologist Valérie Masson-Delmotte. “The A69 is one of those projects that must be abandoned (…) We consider that this project keeps France on a trajectory incompatible with the ecological transition as enshrined in the law”, wrote the signatories about this motorway “socially unjust” and which “neither the intensity of traffic nor the envisaged time savings” justify according to them.
