Carnival parade in Spain with Nazis and concentration camp prisoners
A Spanish carnival parade with a group disguised as Nazis caused anger and indignation beyond the country’s borders. At the parade near the city of Ciudad Real in the Castile-La Mancha region, a participating club in SS uniforms and as prisoners in concentration camps was walking through the streets to disco music.
The “Asociación Cultural El Chaparral de Las Mesas” from Cuenca defended the action: the aim was to honor the victims “one of the most shameful events in human history”, the newspaper “El País” quoted the association on Tuesday.
The latter posted a photo on Facebook of a sign on the carnival car, which read, among other things: “In memory of the six million men, women and children who died in the Holocaust (…). You will always be in our memories. »
The Israeli embassy in Spain was outraged by the appearance and spoke on Twitter of a “reprehensible and disgusting performance that trivializes the Holocaust at the carnival (…) and makes fun of the six million Jews killed by the Nazis”.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum tweeted: “It is difficult to describe: memories turned upside down, far beyond vulgar kitsch, without relevance, reflection and respect.” (SDA / dpa)
