Car insurance: Cars in the theft stronghold of Berlin are rarely covered by comprehensive insurance

Although the most common stolen vehicles are in Berlin, Berliners do not protect themselves adequately.

Berlin is the sad leader in car theft. 350 cars per 100,000 registered vehicles are stolen there – more than in any other federal state. This emerges from the 2019 federal management report on vehicle crime by the Federal Criminal Police Office. Nevertheless, Berliners are the least likely to insure their cars with comprehensive insurance. This is shown by a current analysis of the comparison portal Check 24.

Compared to the national average, they are seven percent less likely to choose partial or fully comprehensive insurance. It looks better there in Hamburg.

Highest share of comprehensive insurance in Hamburg, Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein

After Berlin, Hamburg (128 thefts) and Brandenburg (80 thefts) have the most cars stolen for every 100,000 registered vehicles. However, car owners there protect their cars against this risk. Compared to the national average, they take out comprehensive insurance six percent more often and even twelve percent more often than Berliners.

Schleswig-Holstein residents also cover their cars relatively often with comprehensive insurance. At the same time, the number of car thefts with 26 stolen vehicles per 100,000 registrations is slightly below the national average (34 thefts).

The most popular models are after Information from GDV the BMW X6, 2nd generation (47,674 euros average claims expenditure), followed by the Land Rover Velar, 1st generation (57,886 euros) and the Mazda CX-5, 2nd generation (26,954 euros).

“The comprehensive insurance covers a stolen car if it doesn’t show up again within four weeks,” says Dr. Tobias Stuber, Managing Director of Motor Insurance at Check 24. “Consumers have to pay attention to a few things. For example, the car must be carefully locked and the theft must be reported directly to the police. “(Dr)
