Berlin. Meanwhile, some residents in northern Neukölln will probably consider the police to be powerless. Because again on Sunday night cars went up in flames – this time several. It is the fourth night in a row. And the residents are worried. “Next time it may be my car,” said one of them on site.

The results of the previous night: A fire in the interior of a VW on Nansenstrasse and three burning cars on Donaustrasse. While the police were able to extinguish the flames themselves in the first case, which was noticed by residents around 2:10 a.m., the cars on Donaustrasse – a VW, a Citroen and a Mercedes – burned out almost completely at the same time. A taxi parked next to it was damaged and a resident was just able to drive his seat away, as he later said.

The perpetrators have apparently been targeting mid-range cars in Neukölln for a few days. Already on Saturday night a Renault fell victim to arson at Schönstedtstrasse. On the night of Friday, an Opel was set on fire in the same street and a Nissan and a Skoda on Donaustrasse. A VW burned there 24 hours earlier. “The local colleagues are sensitized,” said a police spokeswoman.

Police are examining relationships between the crimes

The police assume arson in each of the cases. “Connections to all burning vehicles in and around Neukölln in the past nights are checked,” the spokeswoman continued. Two other cases that were somewhat more distant would also be taken into account. In the night of Thursday, a VW burned on Rixdorfer Strasse in Mariendorf, not far from the district border. Almost at the same time, a van from a building technology company on Nobelstrasse south of Grenzallee went up in flames. In the latter case, according to the police, political motivation is also checked.
