Thanks to Bandai Namco we were able to better analyze some aspects of the gameplay of Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions, a title now in the pipeline on the 28th of this month on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. From the analysis carried out, we were able to better understand some features of the game’s gameplay that were previously hidden. Dribbling

Every time we saw the title in action, the impression was that more than the single skill of the player used, the core of the gameplay revolved around the player’s ability to use the dribbling possibilities offered with timing. Thanks to the analysis carried out, we therefore deduced that the impression was correct. The game offers a system similar to that of “rock-paper-scissors” applied to dribbling and tackling, in which the timing and choices of the player will make the difference between success and failure during an action.

The attackers will therefore have two possibilities of dribbling at their disposal: the sprinting one performed with the pressure of R1 while running, and then the dribbling techniques to be performed with the pressure of R2. Similarly, in defense, the player can run towards the opponent with R1 for a normal tackle or slip with R2 (or circle, alternatively) to produce a more aggressive tackle. The choice of which solution to carry out triggers the “rock-paper-scissor” system mentioned above: if the attacker chooses to press R1 he can win against the defender who uses R2 but he will lose against the one who chooses to use R1, while if you opt for a dribbling technique you will win against the defender who uses R1 but you will lose against the one who makes a slide with R2. Vice versa in defense the contrast with R1 will beat the dribbling with R1 and the slip with R2 will beat the dribbling technique with R2.

Spirit

As we have had the opportunity to tell you several times, the use of advanced techniques during the games will consume the “spirit“of the players. Savings, special shots, dribbling techniques and slides will squander this bar, making your future actions less and less effective, leading you more and more into critical situations. The use of spirit and careful reasoning of actions will be fundamental in matches . Precisely in this context, therefore, we discovered that the functioning of the goalkeeper’s spirit acts in a peculiar way compared to the rest of the other players. One of the few modalities not explained during the entire pre-launch period of the title was the section work out. Thanks to this analysis we were able to grasp some details about it. First of all we will have the opportunity to carry out test matches, without time timers, in which to test the teams, the players and also the synergies that can be used for possible combined techniques between players. In fact, we will be able to take full advantage of the possibilities offered by having Misaki and Tsubasa in the opposing trocar in the team and train in the use of their combination of passes. In addition to this, however, the training mode will allow you to prepare for specific situations such as corners, tackles and dribbling. This possibility is certainly very important since, for example, in the “rock-paper-scissor” issue of dribbling and tackling situations, it will be essential to train the reflexes and get the eye used to recognizing the animations dedicated to R1 and R2 to win the clashes and make the best choices.

Tactics

We told you how in the options menu dedicated to the management of the squad, there is the possibility to choose specific tactics and assign them to the four keys of the directional cross. Although so far this was not clear feature, thanks to the new analysis we were able to grasp some details. Once you have chosen a tactic to assign to a button of the cross, you can give this order during the game and have the players involved perform a certain action. For example, if we choose the “combo overlap” by selecting Hiroshi Jito ei Tachibana brothers in the Japanese national team, by assigning it to the down button of the cross, during the match we will be able to unhook the three players from their defensive tasks by launching them to attack. Not only does this possibility create important dynamics at the strategy level, but it offers an opportunity for special techniques combined. In fact, having the right players in the right position, we will be able to perform special shooting and passing techniques that will see the pressure of the appropriate keys with the right timing. Bringing Jito and the Tachibana Bros. forward could for example be a chance to force the play that sees them as protagonists in attack, allowing the twins to jump on Jito’s legs to perform their special combined shot of the Japanese national team also seen in the trailers.

Finishing

The last element captured by the analysis was the refinement of some details also at a functional level. One of the “criticisms” of the title in this pre-launch period was the excessive invasiveness of some graphics during the matches. The silhouette of the players, the barre, on-screen indicators and much more left little room for the actual game by obscuring parts of the pitch. Comparing the various images we found that these reports appear to have been heard, with the graphics significantly reduced. From what you can see, no information has been compromised, everything remains legible and also the visibility of the actions on the screen is improved.

What we could observe of the gameplay of Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions gives us the confirmation that it is on balance a stratified title, able to offer concrete possibilities both in terms of tactics and player skills. The release of the title is now upon us and to understand how it behaves we will have to wait for the litmus test constituted by the review. The premises are tempting, the game has what it takes to be a fun arcade football and now we just have to wait for the return of Captain Tsubasa.
