Capital India extends lockdown, more than 400,000 infections in one day

In the previous week, the country reported more than 300,000 cases of infection every day. In the past 24 hours, 3,523 people died from Covid-19. This brings the total death toll to 211,853, the third highest in the world, after the United States, Brazil and Mexico.

The lockdown was supposed to end on Monday, but the situation in the city of more than 20 million inhabitants has deteriorated to such an extent that easing is not justified at the moment.

Alarming increase

Meanwhile, India is trying to step up vaccination efforts. Although the country is the world’s largest vaccine producer, it currently does not have enough vaccines of its own in the fight against Covid-19.

India has been experiencing an alarming increase in corona infections since March, possibly due to a double mutated variant of the lung virus. Many hospitals can no longer handle the pressure. They are short of beds and oxygen, as can be seen in this video:

According to scientists, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has for too long ignored the rising numbers and failed to take measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
