Cancer patients and Covid-19. What did 12 months of pandemic teach us? Oltenasul

The Federation of Associations of Cancer Patients in Romania (FABC), with the support of Roche Romania, brought together representatives of the most important oncology institutes in the country, who recounted the experience of the pandemic now, almost a year after its onset.

Doctors in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi and Timisoara together called for awareness of the importance of detecting and treating cancer quickly, even during the pandemic. Cancer patients are encouraged to overcome their fear of COVID-19 and return to the doctor in order to continue their treatment, they are confident that hospitals and oncology centers strictly comply with health safety rules. In addition, Romanians who notice that they are experiencing the symptoms of serious diseases must urgently consult a doctor, in order to receive a diagnosis as soon as possible and to start the appropriate treatment.

It is essential that patients consult their doctor from the first symptoms, no matter how minor, because the detection of early-stage cancer increases the chances of survival. In the advanced stages, unfortunately, treatment options are limited.

“The ocological diagnosis decreased by 30-40% compared to 2019 and we have over 10,000 non-COVID deaths in addition to November 2020, compared to November 2019. Not to mention lung cancer: there are over 3,000 undiagnosed cases of lung cancer since the onset of the pandemic. In the context of the launch of the European Cancer Plan, it is time for Romania to accelerate the steps for the development and adoption of a National Oncology Plan meant to reduce the burden of the disease. Such a framework tool is the only solution to reduce the incidence and mortality of cancer in Romania “ declare Cezar Irimia, president of the Federation of Associations of Cancer Patients in Romania.

In support of patients, the platform CdelaControl.ro, launched during the pandemic, aims to gather together the most important information about the disease, why and how important is the correct and uninterrupted administration of treatment. Here, patients also find an interactive map of Romania, which includes the complete list of hospitals and clinics where oncological diseases are treated in the country. All information is verified by specialists experienced in treating these conditions.

It was founded in 2005 out of the need for all those fighting cancer to become a force with a strong voice. The FABC is the interface between member organizations and state institutions, European institutions involved in health, and similar European and international organizations.
