Canada’s Prime Minister Trudeau says India may have been involved in the assassination of a Sikh leader in Canada. Canadian security services are investigating “credible allegations” that people linked to the Indian government were involved in the June liquidation, he said.

India has not yet responded to Trudeau’s words. In the Canadian parliament, the prime minister called it “an extremely serious issue.” If Indian government involvement is found, Trudeau said it would be “a completely unacceptable violation of our sovereignty.”

Top diplomat is expelled

A top Indian diplomat is being expelled from the country over the issue. It concerns the head of Indian intelligence in Canada, says Foreign Minister Joly.

45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead by masked men in June. It happened near a Sikh temple in the city of Surrey in British Columbia. Supporters of the religious leader hold India responsible.

The Indian government considered Nijjar a terrorist because he was part of the Khalistan movement. The aim of this organization is to establish a separate state for Sikhs in India. This religious community forms according to the BBC about 2 percent of the Indian population.

Canada’s Sikh diaspora is the largest outside the Indian state of Punjab. Nijjar’s murder has sparked demonstrations in Canadian cities. In Toronto, pro-India demonstrators faced off against pro-Khalistan demonstrators.
