Canada: Death of actress and activist Shirley Douglas – People

Shirley Douglas, famous Canadian actress and activist, died Sunday at the age of 86, announced her son, actor Kiefer Sutherland. Shirley Douglas died Sunday morning of pneumonia, the actor said in a message on Twitter, adding that his death was not linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

“My mother was an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life,” wrote Kiefer Sutherland, famous for having played the role of Jack Bauer in the American series 24 Hours chrono. “Unfortunately, she had been fighting for her health for some time and we, her family, knew that this day was coming,” he added.

Daughter of Tommy Douglas, who was Prime Minister of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan (west), Shirley Douglas led her acting career between Canada and the United States where she toured with great directors such as Stanley Kubrick and David Cronenberg.

She is also known to have campaigned for a number of causes, including the civil rights movement and the Black Panthers in the United States or in defense of the public health care system in Canada. She had three children, two of them with Canadian actor Donald Sutherland.
