Reported from Indian ExpressDirector of Interventional Cardiology at Fortis Hospital in Bangalore, Dr. Keshava R confirmed that people who sleep can have a heart attack.

“Yes, heart attacks can occur during sleep,” he said.

This condition is even experienced by about 10 percent of people with heart problems. Generally, heart attacks during sleep strike the elderly, people with diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and people with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) or breathing disorders during sleep.

Head of Medical Affairs from the South Asia branch of ResMed doctor Sibasish Dey explained, people who fall asleep will feel relaxed muscles, including those in the neck and throat.

However, those who have excess neck tissue will put pressure on their airways and even collapse.

When the airways collapse, the airways to reach the lungs will narrow. This condition is seen in people who snore.

As a result, his breathing will stop at any time during sleep. This condition disrupts the supply of oxygen every night so it has a very negative impact on the body.

Knowing what sleep apnea is is very important so that you can seek medical help immediately and get the right treatment.

Another possible reason for having a heart attack during sleep is chronic obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

“Usually, blood pressure will drop at night. If you have sleep apnea, your blood pressure may not drop, which can lead to high blood pressure,” Dey explained.

Whenever oxygen levels in the body drop, blood pressure actually increases and causes a surge of adrenaline. The heart eventually has to work harder to normalize blood pressure.

“High blood pressure can lead to other consequences such as heart attacks and strokes,” said Dr Dey.

People who experience this disorder also usually have type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and various cardiovascular diseases.

Lack of sleep

Not only that, lack of sleep can also put a person at risk of having a heart attack while sleeping.

“While a day or two of sleep deprivation can be tolerated, consistently missing sleep can lead to serious health problems and exacerbate some existing conditions,” says Dey.

Poor quality sleep or only short naps can cause atherosclerosis or narrowing of the arteries due to a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances. This condition often increases the risk of cardiovascular disorders.
