Can the flu vaccine aggravate the condition of patients with Covid-19? A Spanish study suggests so – Executive Digest

A Spanish study carried out at the Barbastro hospital in Huesca establishes a link between the flu vaccine and deaths from Covid-19, suggesting that one of the components of the vaccine, polysorbate 80, administered to patients over 65, may worsen his prognosis, advances ‘El Confidencial’.

The study carried out in the hospital environment of Barbastro and in a residence in the same province, found that of the 20 total deaths in the hospital’s health sector due to Covid-19, all were over 65 years of age and 17 had been vaccinated against influenza, compared to only three who had not been, which raised suspicions.

“We started investigating and saw that there was a component in vaccines, Polysorbate 80, which had already caused problems with other diseases,” explains Juan Gastón Añaños, one of the experts and authors of the study.

The study, which has not yet been revised, was published on a website known for setting the stage for several “conspiracy theories” and some misinformation, which caused controversy on social networks with many users doubting its veracity and deducing that they are «anti-vaccine» theories.

The authors, three specialists from the hospital in Huesca: Juan Gastón Añaños, Ana Martínez Giménez and Elisa Mª Sahún García, consider that “if these conclusions are drawn, it is because they have not even read the study”.

«If we observe in the article, at no time do we say that it is dangerous to be vaccinated, that there is hidden information, or that there is some trick behind it. We only emphasize that a component of one of the flu vaccines that is administered to people over 65 years of age, may be contributing to worsening the prognosis of patients, ”said Juan Gastón Añaños.

The expert, who denies any relation to these theories, confesses that it was he who published the study on the Internet and sent it to different contact lists before it was published. “We just wanted to draw attention to this, so that people would become aware and ask the institutions for an investigation,” he says.

The PDF in circulation, according to Añaños, is an old version of the study, and new versions are being developed. «Part of our job is to monitor these issues and that is why we started the investigation. I want to underline that, before we publish anything, we notify national health institutions, which are aware of the results ».
