Can tablets come back into favor thanks to Apple?

I have had regular contact with Apple devices for some time. While the subject of smartphones remains flexible and I appreciate the operation of both Android devices and a bitten apple, I have a rather tough position in the subject of desktop and mobile computers. The console is used for gaming, PC for work, unless our job is to test the performance of components and subassemblies, which is what I have the pleasure to do occasionally in PPE. In terms of the comfort of using the operating system, trackpad support, functions and gestures, in my opinion, MacOS is far ahead of Microsoft’s proposals.

Using one of the MacBook Pro models for a certain period of time, I occasionally returned to the PC in various configurations. There were devices with powerful parameters that fired the latest productions with maximum details in 4K. Now he uses a large, 17.3 ”gaming laptop to work in various places in Warsaw, which I use at home in cooperation with a stationary machine. This does not change the fact that he often needs something lighter, smaller and, above all, more comfortable. Therefore, either an ultrabook or a large tablet comes in handy. The latest iPad Pro with a diagonal of 12.9 ”with a great MiniLED display perfectly meets all my needs.

Tablets? I thought it was a thing of the past

I used to use tablets of various kinds. I had a 1st generation iPad, then a 2nd generation. I used Android devices from various manufacturers, but I could not switch to this form of content consumption. For me, the tablet was an extended version of a smartphone, which I always had in my pocket, and despite the smaller display, it performed practically the same functions for me. Why do I need something larger with the same possibilities that I would additionally carry in a bag or backpack? I also saw after the sales results that not only I remain with this perception of this segment of devices. Tablets regularly went into oblivion and occasionally, whether it was Apple with its iPads or Microsoft with its Surface, they tried to somehow save the situation.

However, the problem was the size, often uncomfortable keyboard, rather poor performance and the lack of support for “large” operating systems. Usually what was available on tablets became truncated in some form and was of little use to me. I naturally preferred to use the wide range of ultrabooks. I took a liking for a Macbook Air for a while, which seemed to meet all my requirements. This went on for several years, while tablets were only an occasional curiosity for me. Until the release of the latest iPad Pro 12.9 ”equipped with the revolutionary M1 processor.

This is no longer an ordinary tablet, but a real combine. It is only slightly smaller than the only right, for me, 13 ”Macbooks. At the same time, it has a great, detachable keyboard, on which you can finally comfortably type. Even in the middle of the night. You can also connect an ordinary mouse via bluetooth, but if necessary, the trackpad also works. The M1 processor eats practically everything that Intel has ever placed in any tablet for breakfast – including those from the Apple stable. Four built-in speakers can sound better than many laptops, and a 120 Hz display … well, this is an absolute world championship. Sometimes I am a graphic designer, I sketch a lot, I also need to write down something by hand at business meetings, because I get it so naturally. And this stylus is simply sensational, very accurate like a pen and, above all, comfortable. You only need to look at what talented people can draw with its help.

The tablet is also more convenient to use than a laptop, it works faster, offers more freedom thanks to the touchscreen, and if necessary, I can charge it very quickly from the USB-C connector. What’s more, the battery lasts for 9 hours of continuous movie playback, and while browsing the Internet, it gains an additional few hours. What could I complain about? First of all, the price. The latest iPad Pro with an M1 processor costs as much as a very good laptop, over PLN 6,000 in a package with a 512 GB disk for user data. In addition, at sick prices, there is a dedicated keyboard, which we will buy for at least PLN 1600. If we still wanted a mouse and a cover, we could easily exceed PLN 8,000. For a tablet! This is an amount that is quite difficult to rationalize. The justification for such an expense must be related to the fact that such a device will simply earn for itself.

Can tablets still fill any particular gap?

I thought that the segment of these devices is slowly moving towards kids who can no longer sit at the computer, but still get a tablet from their parents to play mobile games. Perhaps in some cases this is exactly the case. Before me, the iPad Pro opened up completely new possibilities. He proved that a tablet can easily replace a laptop. He can help me in many matters, occasionally serve as a canvas for painting, but more often he is a faithful and useful companion. If I have to write out a concept for a text, plan a test schedule, prepare a communication strategy or simply sketch some graphics – I will do it all thanks to this device and the package includes a full set of necessary tools.

This is what makes tablets so special when someone has the right idea for them. The M1 processor allows a lot of freedom. You can comfortably design thousands of things, even using augmented reality. It may sound a bit like a laureate to a great Apple, but if someone from the competition undertakes the task of delivering such a convenient, thoughtful and refined device to the market, I will also be very happy to test it. Such a large iPad Pro also works when I want to show my friends some material on YouTube, or someone is sending me a new document for signature. This equipment has hundreds of different uses for professionals. That is why I value the ingenuity and accuracy of the company with a bitten apple so much. I am curious about your opinion on tablets. Do you use them? Maybe you had similar experiences to mine? Have your say in the comments! Until next time!
