The camping season in Bavaria finally officially started on Pentecost weekend. It could still pick up speed because caravaning friends have become more popular in recent years and the corona crisis is making holidays in Germany more attractive. But the site operators in the region remain cautious, especially since camping is hardly possible due to the lack of toilets.
“Either way, we wouldn’t have opened until Saturday before Pentecost”
Sybille Strmper – Camping Estenfeld–
Most campsites can be found on a river, lake or near a forest. The one in Estenfeld is between a residential area and the B 19. And otherwise it has a special effect. The interior of the reception room and the sanitary area are out of date, everything is clean and tidy, the space itself looks like a orchard without trees. And Corona? Is not there, but omnipresent. “Either way, we wouldn’t have opened until Saturday before Pentecost,” says Sybille Strmper (66).
The course has a third fewer pitches this season due to Corona
Her parents created the square in 1953. It should be the oldest in a wide area. Her husband lived on the camping site during his business studies in the 1970s. The spark jumped. For decades, the couple, who have two long-grown children, have been taking care of the square. “A real sign forest,” reports Bernhard Strmper, is what has so far occupied him the most. He worked out the hygiene information boards in a very neat way and covered them with foil. Distance and the requirement to wear a mask are also the order of the day on Strmper’s Square.
“We usually have around 50 parking spaces, but this season there are about a third fewer spaces due to the required distances,” says Strmper. However, one is probably not as busy as quickly. “We are a popular camping site in transit, also because we are conveniently located near the A7,” explains the 73-year-old. “Many Scandinavians and Dutchmen stop by on our way to the Sden.” Normally, the wave of northern European motorhomes will hit the Mediterranean around mid-June.
Mr. Specht doesn’t trust the roast yet
What is happening this year? The strmpers don’t know. It is obvious that significantly fewer Northern Lights will spend their vacation on the Adriatic. On the other hand, the Strmpers recently benefited from another trend in addition to the general camping boom. “More and more guests come to us from here to go on bike tours or to see Wrzburg.”

Camping operators along the Main also feel this: the river downhill is the first in Zellingen, the cold source lies upstream at the gates of Heidingsfeld, the motorhome parking space in Eibelstadt and the KNAUS camping park in Frickenhausen. Their operators are Karl Peter and Monika Specht. How does Corona affect them? “You can ask me that at the end of the season.” Mr. Specht doesn’t trust the roast yet. The previous revenue shortfalls cannot be made up anyway.
In the days before Pentecost, the woodpeckers also got their place in good shape and implemented the clearance / hygiene concept. Then on Saturday he opened his barrier again. But Specht said that one was not fully booked. Nothing will change that quickly due to the tipping weather.
The permanent campers followed roughly with the opening of the beer gardens in mid-May
Stefan Schmitt, owner of the Kalte Quelle campsite in Heidingsfeld, also speaks of high levels of income that would even postpone his targeted retirement. He thought the long shutdown was exaggerated. Nevertheless, there was always something going on with him, who lives with his family directly on the square.

Campers who have their permanent residence at the Cold Spring were allowed to spend the night in their cars at any time. Long-term campers followed approximately with the opening of the beer gardens in mid-May. Schmitt also operates one on his premises. “If there is anything positive about the crisis, it is that the cohesion has grown with us and our guests are very grateful that we have opened again.” At Pentecost weekend, he offered mackerel that would have been sold out quickly.
And how does that work with the sanitary facilities? “Most of the campers are self-sufficient these days and have a shower and toilet on board. And for the rest, there is a key if necessary.” In the Corona season, campsites seem to have become even more pragmatic.
