Cameroonian academic Achille Mbembe has been crowned winner of the 2024 Holberg Prize, a distinction considered the “Nobel” of Arts, Letters, Human Sciences, Law and Theology. This major recognition rewards all of his work, saluting his exceptional contributions in these fields.
Mbembe, professor of history and political science at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, is a key figure in contemporary thought. His work explores crucial themes such as postcoloniethe governancethe biopolitics and the crisis of democracy.
The Holberg Prize will be awarded to him on June 6 at the University of Bergen in Norway. This prestigious award comes with an endowment of around 600,000 euros.
Biography
Born in 1957 in Cameroon, Achille Mbembe is an internationally renowned historian, political scientist and essayist. He has taught at prestigious universities around the world and published numerous critically acclaimed works.
