Cambuur trainer De Jong: ‘Still hoping that there will be no lawsuit’ | NOW

SC Cambuur coach Henk de Jong continues to hope that no judge will have to be involved to reverse the decision of the KNVB to not have his club promoted to the Eredivisie.

On Friday at 10 am, the summary proceedings that Cambuur and De Graafschap have brought against the football association. “But I still hope that there will be no lawsuit, that would be the most beautiful thing for everyone,” De Jong told Monday Omrop Fryslân.

The 55-year-old Frisian sees the writing of a general members meeting as the ideal solution. This will come when four clubs call for this. Subsequently, a majority is needed to vote out the decision of the KNVB not to apply promotion / relegation in the discontinued season in the Eredivisie.

De Jong sees an Eredivisie with twenty clubs – with Cambuur and De Graafschap and RKC Waalwijk and ADO Den Haag – as the best alternative, although the KNVB has described this as an impossible option.

“But I think it will save the KNVB a lot of misery that the support for an Eredivisie with twenty clubs is now being investigated,” said the Cambuur trainer.

“I remain calm now”

Monday, after the first training of Cambuur in seven weeks, De Jong was a lot calmer than a week and a half ago, when he called the KNVB decision in an initial reaction “the greatest disgrace from Dutch sport ever”. The coach reached many major international media with that statement and was even interviewed by the BBC.

“I’ve been all over the world, columns are still being written about me,” says De Jong. “Well, one person likes me and the other person doesn’t like me. You always have, I can’t do anything with that. I learned that.”

“At least I remain calm now and will not say anything about it anymore. The point now is that sensible people will make a decision.”
