2020 – Almost five months after the Afghan presidential election, the electoral commission officially declares the incumbent head of state Ashraf Ghani the winner. The defeated Abdullah Abdullah does not recognize the result. Under pressure from the USA, the two agree on a distribution of power in May.

2016 – In Clausnitz, Saxony, a screaming crowd blocked a bus carrying refugees. Days later, a series of xenophobic riots began in Bautzen.

2011 – A soldier of the Afghan army shoots three German soldiers at the Bundeswehr outpost “OP North” in the Afghan province of Baghlan.

2008 – The oldest science academy in Europe, the Leopoldina in Halle (Saxony-Anhalt), will in future be Germany’s national academy. It should advise politics and act as the “voice of German science” abroad.
