“By Provincial Government Office” Jeon Ok-joo dies at the time of May 18

Jeon Ok-ju (real name Jeon Chun-sim, photo), who was encouraging citizens to participate, passed away on the 16th. 72 years old.

Chun rode a truck around Gwangju, calling for citizens to join and donate blood through a loudspeaker. Chun’s sorrowful voice agitated the citizens and went to protest.

On May 26, he was kidnapped by martial law forces disguised as citizens, and he was tortured for being a spy. He is also a model for actor Lee Yo-won in the movie’Gorgeous Vacation’ about May 18. Cho Jin-tae, executive director of the 5 18 Memorial Foundation, said, “The voice of the deceased was motivated to participate in the protest even in difficult situations.” He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for violating the decree and was pardoned in 1981. However, he suffered from the aftereffects of torture all his life. The cause of death is also known to be related to chronic diseases caused by torture sequelae. The vacancy was prepared at Sihwa Hospital in Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province. It is scheduled to be buried in the Gwangju National 5 18 Democratic Cemetery on the 19th.
