Burkina Faso’s Transitional President calls for a review of cooperation with France and explores new alliances

The transitional president of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, affirmed, “We are not enemies of the French people, but of the policy of those who run France, which represents a problem in Africa, and therefore as long as a country does not have an imperialist spirit, there is no problem.”

And he indicated, in a televised interview, that “we must accept the peer-to-peer relationship, and accept a review of all aspects of our cooperation,” pointing out that “France is not alone an imperialist country, but there are other countries,” without naming them. He questioned the effectiveness of the presence of French soldiers in Burkina Faso, as part of the fight against jihadists, whom he demanded to leave last January.

Last Monday, Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister, Olivia Ruamba, expressed her country’s desire to “strengthen bilateral cooperation” with Iran, during an interview she held in Tehran with Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi.
