After about 30 years, the British got passports in blue again last year because of the Brexit. In documents of this color, they once traveled the world. In 1988, however, the EU passports in burgundy red were introduced. According to the government, these may continue to be used until the expiry date.
“The return to the iconic design in blue and gold will weave the British passport back into our national identity, and I can’t wait to travel with it,” said UK Home Secretary Priti Patel in London in late February.
There was a lot of anger around the new passports in blue, which the Brexit hardliners in particular had insisted on. Many British people were bothered by the fact that a French company was allowed to produce the documents. The color is not a unique selling point for the UK. More than 80 countries have passports in blue – for example Canada and the USA. In Africa, passports are often green.
