Bundestag election in Cologne: Volt fails at the five percent hurdle

Cologne –

The dream of crossing the five percent hurdle in the federal elections did not come true for the pan-European Volt am Sonntag party. She stayed with the counts in the “Other” bar; Volt also received only 1.3 percent of the second votes in Cologne. And that despite the fact that the party, which was only founded in 2017, was able to secure a place in the 2018 European elections and emerged as the surprise winner in the local elections last year by getting five percent straight away and now belongs to a three-party alliance with the Greens and the CDU in the city council.

According to top candidate Rebekka Müller, who spent the election evening in Berlin, the result is disappointing, but not: “The five percent hurdle is an insane challenge and we are not interested in the sprint, we are interested in the marathon.” Year-olds who ran as a direct candidate in Cologne’s constituency 93 see the federal election as a launch pad. “We really want to make a difference, but that takes time,” said Müller. The party is now concentrating on the state elections in the coming year.
