In the relegation to the Bundesliga, as in previous years, the Bundesliga-16. ran against the third of the 2nd league. In contrast to the relegation to the 2nd league, it was not yet clear before the last matchday which teams had to – or were allowed to – play in the decider for a place in the top flight of football.
But now it is clear! Because Stuttgart won against Cologne and Hertha lost in Dortmund, the Berliners have to go into relegation. Coach Felix Magath, who saw the Berliners as table 17 in March. had taken over: “The worst case scenario did not occur. We managed to move up from 17th to 16th place. That’s why we achieved our minimum target and avoided direct relegation.”
In the 2nd league, HSV secured third place with a 3-2 win in Rostock and is now playing against Berlin in the relegation game.

Interesting: The second division team has home rights in the second leg because their season ends on May 15th later than that of the Bundesliga team on May 14th. The reason for this is that the second division team has fewer days off before the first leg than the Bundesliga team.

Both the first leg on May 19th and the second leg on May 23rd can be seen live on free TV, Sat.1 will broadcast the duel. Also with the pay TV station Sky (Advertisement) you can watch the games live. You can of course follow the relegation games in the Live ticker at BILD.de!
Premiere 2022
As in the Champions League and Europa League, there is no longer an away goal rule in relegation this season. Paragraph 3 of the DFL rules of play, which regulates promotion and relegation, states: “The relegation games will be played as a first and second leg in accordance with the provisions of the Uefa club competitions that apply to the playing of games in the knockout system.”
Called: If there is a tie after the first and second leg, it goes to extra time and then possibly to penalties.
