Brother of Uruguayan Drug Trafficker Arrested in Brazil: Extradition Uncertain, Alleged Involvement in Criminal Organization Revealed

Diego Nicolás Alba Marset, brother of Sebastián Marset, was arrested in Foz de Iguazú (Brazil) in an operation by the Federal Police of that country. The lawyer of the Uruguayan drug trafficker wanted by Interpol, Santiago Moratorio, told Paraguayan radio Monumental that Alba was in the neighboring country “to plan or see the possibility of his surrender.”

According to the Uruguayan criminal lawyer, the brother of the drug trafficker, who is also wanted by Interpol, is a Brazilian citizen. “He was born in Brazil [en Río Grande do Sul]”He is not a Uruguayan citizen,” he highlighted.

This information, Moratorio pointed out, “leaves, in principle, the impossibility of his extradition being carried out, because Brazil does not extradite.”

Although Moratorio is not the lawyer of the drug trafficker’s brother because he needs a Brazilian defense, the lawyer announced that the detainee is being “credited” with the original certified Brazilian document. When asked if Alba had documents of other nationalities, the criminal lawyer claimed to have no knowledge and doubted “that this is the case.”

The Marset family’s lawyer made it clear that the detainee was seeking to be tried by the Brazilian justice system and not by that of Paraguay. “He does not have any confidence in the Paraguayan Justice,” he told the radio program.

In this way, Moratorio questioned Alba’s involvement in Operation Ultranza, for which he was wanted in Paraguay. “The only thing they have is that the brother gave him a car, that they do not prove it and that he is totally unfounded. Only with that does he have an international arrest for him and his family, imagine if he will trust the Paraguayan Justice system,” he expressed.

In this way, the lawyer did not rule out that one of Paraguay’s strategies to reach Sebastián Marset is to capture his brother. “Because if not, there is no reason to charge someone and apply a measure like the Interpol red alert because the brother gave him a car,” he pointed out.

Moratorio also confirmed that Alba became a father a few days ago, although he did not detail the nationality of the newborn baby.

The town where Marset’s brother was detained is part of the triple border where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina meet, an area considered “hot” from a police point of view.

In February 2022, Alba was charged and obtained an arrest warrant within the framework of the operation against the alleged criminal organization led by his brother and Miguel Ángel Insfrán Galeano, alias Tío Rico (already detained). The partner of the alleged drug lord, Gianina García Troche, was also listed in the order issued by the Paraguayan justice system.

Within the framework of the operation called León 23, deployed since last July in Santa Cruz, where Sebastián Marset was residing and carrying out his activities, the Bolivian Police were also looking for his half-brother Diego Nicolás Alba Marset, who according to the investigation presumably had three identities. false, including a Paraguayan ID.

“Diego Alba Marset also has three identities, one Brazilian, one Paraguayan and one Uruguayan. We have entered his private home, unfortunately we have not found this person, we believe that he is a fugitive. However, the actions and operations continue,” the commander of the Bolivian police, General Álvaro Álvarez, said last July.

At that time, Sebastián Marset and his loved ones—among whom would be his stepbrother—managed to evade the police operation deployed in search of him. When the agents arrived at the mansion indicated as the group’s whereabouts, they found no one.
