The study involved 36 people. They were divided into three groups: people with “post-COVID” syndrome, with satisfactory results of computed tomography; people who were hospitalized with COVID-19 more than three months ago, and who have not been ill for a long time, healthy people.
To see the abnormalities, the scientists did magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on patients, as CT scans showed normal lung structure.
Initial results showed that patients with post-COVID syndrome had significant impairments in transporting oxygen from the lungs to the blood, even if other tests were already negative. Similar abnormalities were found in patients hospitalized with severe COVID-19.
Scientists have concluded that the virus causes a certain persistent anomaly in the microstructure of the lungs or their vessels. They suggested that such lung functions, such as the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen, may be impaired even if the lung structure appears normal.
