British fishermen furious over Brexit deal: we are on sale | Abroad

Not only European fishermen, but also British fishermen are dissatisfied with the end result of the Brexit negotiations. They are furious with their Prime Minister Boris Johnson for having ‘held a sale’ in their eyes.

Under the agreement, European fishermen will have access to British waters for at least another 5.5 years, although they will be allowed to catch a quarter less fish than before. During the Brexit campaign in 2016, Brexit proponents promised that British fishermen would gain full sovereignty over British waters. Fishermen still think their own catch quotas are far too low.

The UK National Federation of Fisheries Organizations says the industry has been sacrificed by Johnson. As an example, the spokesperson cites the UK’s share of haddock fisheries in the Celtic Sea, where 80 percent of the catch remains in the hands of the EU fleet for another five years.

“In the final stages of the negotiations, the prime minister has made major concessions, despite the rhetoric and his commitments. There will of course be an extensive public relations exercise to portray the deal as a fabulous victory, but it will be seen by the fishing industry as a major defeat, ” Chairman Barrie Deas told The Guardian.

The Dutch fishing sector has also reacted disappointed with the fisheries agreement. While they are relieved to keep access to British waters, they are unhappy with the new catch quota.
