Britain plans to ease visa rules due to shortage of truck drivers

The coronavirus pandemic and Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union have led to a crisis in the UK transport sector and a shortage of truck drivers, with negative effects on supply networks and growing problems. For example, there are huge queues at petrol stations. Foreign media report that the British government intends to announce plans to issue temporary visas to truck drivers to alleviate acute labor shortages.

On Friday, the government called on the public to refrain from buying panicked fuel after part of the filling station was closed due to the inability to receive supplies. The agricultural sector is also facing problems. For example, farmers have to pour large amounts of milk. Retailers are also having trouble stockpiling goods for the upcoming Christmas shopping fever.

Reuters reports that the British government will announce plans to issue temporary visas to truck drivers to alleviate acute labor shortages.

Newspapers report that the government will allow up to 5,000 foreign drivers with short-stay visas to enter the UK.

Logistics companies and retailers have been asking for it for several months, but the government had previously rejected it. The UK Road Transport Association estimates that the UK needs another 100,000 drivers to meet demand.
