Latvian ports handled 30% less cargo in six months; rail freight transport has decreased by 47% – in Latvia

In the first half of this year, 22.628 million tons of cargo were handled in Latvian ports, which is 30.1% less than in the corresponding period of 2019, according to the information compiled by the Ministry of Transport.

In six months, Latvian ports handled the most bulk cargo – 10.51 million tons, which is 43.2% less than a year earlier.

Of which 2.129 million tonnes of coal were transhipped, which is 4.6 times less, 2.186 million tonnes of cereals and cereal products were transhipped, which is 6.4% less, and 1.162 million tonnes of wood chips were transhipped, an increase of 17%. 4%, but chemical bulk cargo – 1.038 million tons, which is 10.4% less.

In the first half of 2020, liquid cargo in Latvian ports was handled in the amount of 6.244 million tons, which is 13.5% less than a year earlier.

Most of the transshipped liquid cargo was oil products – 5.909 million tons, which is a decrease of 12.7%.

In its turn, general cargo in Latvian ports in the first six months of this year was handled in the amount of 5.874 million tons, which is by 12.1% less than in the corresponding period of 2019.

Of which 2.286 million tonnes were handled in containers, which is 6.8% less than a year ago, timber – 1.828 million tonnes, which is 21% less, and roll-on / roll-off (ro-ro) cargo – 1.515 million tonnes, a decrease of 10.7%.

In terms of the volume of cargo handled in the leading position in the first six months of this year, the port of Riga was still handled, where 11.843 million tons were handled, which is 26.7% less than in the corresponding period last year.

This is followed by Ventspils port, where cargo turnover in the first half of this year amounted to 6.8 million tons, which is 41.1% less, but in third place was the port of Liepaja with 3.085 million tons, which is 15.6% less than a year earlier.

Of the small Latvian ports, the largest cargo turnover in the first six months of 2020 was in Skulte port – 491,000 tons, which is 8% less than a year earlier. Followed by the port of Mērsrags with 215,700 tons, which is 12.8% less, and the port of Salacgrīva with 158,200 tons, which is 21.8% less.

In total, 899,800 tons of cargo were handled in small Latvian ports in the first half of this year, which is 11.8% less than in the corresponding period in 2019.

In 2019, 62.379 million tons of cargo were handled in Latvian ports, which was by 5.7% less than in 2018.

The volume of railway freight transportation in Latvia in the first six months of this year has decreased by 47.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2019 and was 11.563 million tons, according to the data compiled by the Ministry of Transport.

Among them, the volume of international transportation amounted to 10.925 million tons, which is a decrease of 48.7% compared to the corresponding period of 2019, but the volume of domestic transportation has increased by 5.7% – to 638,000 tons.

The collected information shows that the volume of transit cargo from international rail freight transport was 9.042 million tons, which is a decrease of 53.9% compared to the first six months of 2019, the volume of import cargo was 1.701 million tons, which is 9.1% more, but export cargo – 182,000 tons, which is an increase of 32.2%.

At the same time, the volume of rail transit cargo through ports in the first half of 2020 was 7.642 million tons, which is 55.9% less than a year earlier, but land transit through the territory of Latvia – 1.4 million tons, which is a decrease of 38.6% .

In 2019, the volume of rail freight transportation in Latvia decreased by 15.8% compared to 2018 and was 41.492 million tons. Of which, in the first six months of last year, the volume of rail freight transport amounted to 18.611 million tons.
