Brest Health Mondays focus on chronic bowel disease – Brest

Commonly called “IBD”, these very debilitating disorders center around Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which affect both women and men, and occur at all ages. If the first case was detected in France on a 3-month-old child, these chronic bowel diseases are most often diagnosed between 20 and 30 years old for Crohn’s disease and between 30 and 40 years old for ulcerative colitis. .

The session will be moderated by Dr Julien Jézéquel, gastroenterologist at the CHRU Brest, and Dr. Franck Chollet, head of department at the CHRU Brest. They will be accompanied by Nolwenn Inizan-Quéru, from the departmental association Alfa Crohn RCH France and Fragan Valentin-Leméni, deputy mayor of Brest in charge of promoting physical and mental health.

Genetic predispositions

The two doctors from Brest will explain the link between genetic predispositions and the onset of these diseases or how environmental and food-related factors can awaken favorable ground. They will also take stock of current treatments and the progress made around the various molecules that reduce pain, but also the frequency of surgical procedures.

How to identify the first signs of the disease and intervene upstream, in order to avoid the aggravation and the consequences on the intestine? The speakers will also explain the state of research on food, as well as the possibilities offered by family prevention and the dietary management of patients, which are avenues currently being taken.

Update on treatments

While progress has been made in the detection of the disease and the range of possible treatments, most patients struggle to escape the chronicity of the disease. Speakers will discuss the chances of stopping, at least after five years, its treatment, and will also discuss the high statistical risks of recovery. But knowledge and research are progressing. As is the care and support of patients by the dedicated Finistère association.
