Werder Bremen coach Markus Anfang and his assistant left the German club on Saturday over the investigation into the alleged use of false COVID-19 vaccination certificates.

According to the entity’s general director, Frank Baumann, Anfang and Florian Junge “assume their responsibility and are helping to end the discomfort that has been generated around the club and the team in recent days.”

The Bremen city prosecutor’s office is investigating allegations that both technicians used false vaccination documentation. The second division team said on Friday the coach denied any wrongdoing.

“I received my two vaccinations at an official vaccination center and I have the documents to prove it,” Anfang said in a club statement. “I hope that this matter is resolved soon.”

On Saturday, before the game against Schalke, Anfang announced his resignation “due to the extremely stressful situation for the club, for the team, for my family and for myself.”

In Germany, proof of vaccination or proof of having recently passed the coronavirus is required to enter many restaurants or public places, depending on state regulations.

Anfang took over as Bremen manager in June after relegation to Bundesliga 2 after 40 years in the top division. The team occupies the eighth position of the classification.

Assistant Danjiel Zenkovic will take over the reins of the ground team against Schalke 04.
