The vaccine against Alzheimer’s could be getting closer. According to preliminary research presented at the Scientific Sessions of Basic Cardiovascular Sciences of the American Heart Association By 2023, a new prototype, which targets inflamed brain cells associated with the disease, could hold the key to preventing or potentially changing its course.
“Alzheimer’s disease now accounts for 50% to 70% of dementia patients worldwide. The new vaccine test from our mouse study points to a potential way to prevent or modify the disease. The future challenge will be to achieve similar results in humans,” said study lead author Chieh-Lun Hsiao, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in the department of cardiovascular biology and medicine at Juntendo University School of Medicine in Tokio.
“If it could be successful in humans, would be a great step forward in slowing the progression of the disease or even prevent it,” he added.
In this study, the research team created a mouse model with Alzheimer’s disease that mimics a human brain and simulates the pathology induced by amyloid beta protein, indicate it’s a statement of the American Heart Association.
To test the efficacy of this drug, a part of the mice were treated with a control dose and others with the vaccine. at two and four months of age.
The mice that received the vaccine were more cautious and more aware of the things around them, a sign that the researchers say could indicate a decline in the disease. In addition, several inflammatory biomarkers of the pathology were also reduced.
Vaccinated mice tended to behave as normal healthy specimens and showed more awareness of their surroundings, while in the other group they suffered in a greater proportion some cognitive deterioration.
“Other previous studies using different vaccines to treat the disease in mouse models have been successful in reducing amyloid plaque deposits and inflammatory factors, however what makes our study different is that our SAGP vaccine also altered the behavior of these mice for the better,” Hsiao commented.
