Breakthrough Discovery: Blood Test Reveals Organ Aging and Disease Risk

Jakarta

Scientists have discovered that a simple blood test can now detect which organs are most likely to experience damage first in a person’s body. That way, a person can get treatment before the disease actually occurs, so that the risk of death can be reduced.

Through this discovery, scientists say, doctors can predict which organs will age the fastest. This is good news for British citizens aged 50 years and over. Because according to a journal published in Nature, one in five people in this age group experiences organ aging very quickly.

Throughout the study, scientists studied proteins in the blood of 5,678 patients and linked levels of those proteins to specific organs. They tagged all proteins whose genes were four times more active in one organ compared to another to predict the age of each organ.

“When we compared the biological age of each of these organs for each individual with a large group of people who did not have severe disease, we found that 18.4 percent of those aged 50 years or older had at least one organ that was aging significantly faster than their biological age,” said Professor Tony Wyss-Coray from Stanford Medicine, California, quoted from the Mirror, Friday (8/12/2023).

“We found that these people had a high risk of developing disease in certain organs in the next 15 years,” he said further.

The results showed that people with rapidly aging hearts had a 2.5 times higher risk of heart failure than people with normally aging hearts.

In addition, people with brains with an ‘older’ biological age were 1.8 times more likely to experience cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease over five years than those with younger biological brain ages.

“If we can reproduce these findings in 50,000 or 100,000 individuals, it means that by monitoring the health of individual organs in apparently healthy people, we may be able to find organs undergoing accelerated aging in the human body, and we may be able to treat people before they get sick ,” concluded Prof Wyss-Coray.
