Breaking News: Dutch Bowel Cancer Screening Program Enhanced with Algorithm for Improved Detection

Every year, about two million Dutch people between the ages of fifty-five and seventy-five receive a purple envelope on the doorstep. The envelope contains an invitation for the bowel cancer screening program with a stool test called FIT (fecal immunochemical test).

Based on the presence of blood in your poop, the risk of colon cancer can be estimated for any follow-up examination. Although the number of people with colon cancer in the Netherlands is decreasing thanks to the population survey, the FIT could be even more effective in detecting colon cancer. The addition of an algorithm could possibly play a role in this. Five questions for PhD student Tim Kortlever, who conducted research into the use of algorithms in… screening on colon cancer.
