At least 20 people suspected of being members of a bank robbery gang in Brazil killed on Sunday (31/10) in a police operation in Minas Gerais.
“The initial information we have at this time is that more than 20 criminals have died,” a police source said AFP.
The operation is said to have been carried out in conjunction with the local Military Police, carried out near the city of Varghina. Police raided two farms where ‘special criminals rob banks and ATMs’.
At the time of the raid, the group was said to be preparing a plan to destroy several regional branch banks.
A total of 18 suspected gang members died on the farm, while two others died as police approached a second farm.
A number of weapons were seized, including rifles and grenades. In addition, the police also seized several stolen vehicles.
Police said the gang often set fire to vehicles to block roads to launch their escape after robberies. Things like this often complicate the pursuit of the police.
In August, a gang in Aracatuba, Sao Paulo, spread terror during a robbery involving drones, explosives and hostages as human shields.
Brazil has seen an increase in highly planned bank robberies involving heavy weapons. The robbers usually targeted not-so-big cities and planned their escape very carefully.
