Bpost brings in topper from FedEx

Bpost Group brings in Jean Muls to become CEO of Bpost Belgium. The boss of Boston Consulting in Belgium, Nicolas Baise, then becomes the head of strategy and transformation.

The most striking announcement is the creation of a new position: that of CEO of Bpost Belgium. That post is entrusted to Jean Muls, who has been working for the American courier group Federal Express for the past six years.

Muls was responsible for the Air Hub activities at FedEx, in other words the courier services by plane. He had, among other things, the cargo hubs of FedEx at airports such as Liège, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich and Copenhagen as well as those of Charles de Gaulle.

Before Muls, who is French-speaking, moved to FedEx, he was CEO of Imtech Belgium. He previously also worked at Vinçotte and Flightcare. Muls graduated as a civil engineer at the ULB in Brussels at the time.

Muls will be tasked with merging Bpost’s two major Belgian divisions, the letter post and parcel service, and to develop synergies. Letter post is still important for Bpost’s profitability, but it is decreasing noticeably every year. Parcel business is growing, but profit margins in this competitive segment are quite low.

New head transformation

In addition to Muls, Bpost is also recruiting an expert from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). It’s about Nicolas Baise. Baise has been working for BCG for the last 15 years and is the head of the Belgian consultancy practice. He is also a member of the energy and industry department of the advisory group. He worked extensively for both utility companies and transport groups. Baise will be head of strategy and transformation for Bpost. Also an important function in light of the major change that this public company has to go through.

Both Baise and Muls become members of the executive committee and become direct employees of Dirk Tirez, the CEO of Bpost Group. Bpost is also looking for a new financial director and head of technology. Recruitment offices are busy with that search.

Bpost also just announced its results for the third quarter. These are in line with expectations, says Bpost. Just like PostNl, Bpost has felt the impact of the new VAT regulation that applies to web shops from outside Europe.
