BPOM Considers the Importance of Reading Food and Beverage Product Packaging Labels

Jakarta: Every product food or packaged drinks generally have a label containing information on the nutritional value of the product. Reading packaging labels carefully helps you to understand the nutritional content of the foods you eat on a daily basis. It is also one of the ten guidelines nutrition balanced issued by Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia.

“Packaging labels on processed food are information media that contain information about food and should provide correct and clear information to the public,” said Dra. Indriemayatie Asri Gani, Apt, Coordinator of the Community Empowerment Substance Group, Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) in the #TanyaAhlinya session by Lemonilo.

However, there are times when the label is exaggerating or obscuring something, giving it an inappropriate meaning. Therefore, the labels of processed food traded need to be regulated in order to provide correct and not misleading information

Indriemayantie added, food labels are regulated in:

– BPOM Regulation Number 20 of 2021 concerning Amendments to BPOM Regulation Number 31 of 2018 concerning Processed Food Material Labels.

– BPOM Regulation Number 16 of 2020 concerning Inclusion of Nutritional Value Information for Processed Food produced by MSMEs.

– BPOM Regulation Number 22 of 2019 concerning Information on Nutritional Value in Processed Food.

According to Indriemayatie, by reading the packaging labels on processed food, consumers can get clear information regarding the product. Second, the label as a decision maker for consumers to buy a product.

“After seeing the label with the information contained in it, it will be easier for consumers to make a decision to buy or not, according to their needs,” said Indriemayatie.

The third function is to educate consumers. With labels, consumers can find out what nutrients are contained in the product.

“Finally, reading labels correctly and appropriately can have an impact on reducing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension, and others, because the label includes composition and nutritional value information so that consumers can choose products that suit their needs for sugar, salt and sugar. their fat,” concluded Indrimayatie.
