Bottoms on Prime Video: what is this queer and feminist comedy with Kaia Gerber about?

Released in cinemas last August in the United States, this feature film arrives on Monday November 20 in the platform’s catalog. This comedy written by the duo Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott promises, in any case, a good dose of laughter by deconstructing prejudices about adolescence and homosexuality.

It’s the comedy that created a surprise in the United States this summer. Released in theaters in August across the Atlantic, Bottoms aroused great interest among the American public by bringing in 12 million dollars in revenue. Monday, November 20, it’s the turn of French moviegoers to discover the film which will be available in the Prime Video catalog. Written by Emma Seligman – also directing – and Rachel Sennott – casting in one of the lead roles –, Bottoms promises to be uninhibited and hilarious, while tackling themes like adolescence and homosexuality.

Thus, the plot features two best friends, PJ (played by Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri), respectively in love with Isabel and Brittany, the most prominent girls in high school. To seduce them, the duo will do everything possible, even creating a self-defense club, which they present as an ode to female empowerment. Of course, nothing will go as planned, but PJ and Josie intend to lose their virginity at all costs before entering university. To this crazy recipe where letting go is essential, a good dose of nostalgia completes the story of these teenage girls, like the references to Fight Club by David Fincher, when a fight scene where the girls draw blood freely leaves their sports teachers haggard.

New faces on display

To a scenario that holds nothing back by playing on clichés of the “teen movie” genre, a heterogeneous cast is added to the equation. Thus Kaia Gerber, the daughter of the famous model Cindy Crawford, slips into Brittany’s shoes. Most recently appeared in Babylon by Damien Chazelle, the young woman continues her artistic projects. For his part, Ayo Edebiri lends his features to Josie. Revealed in The Bear or Abbott Elementary, the 28-year-old actress shines brilliantly in the comic register. Ruby Cruz (Willow), Havana Rose Liu (Sans issue), Nicholas Galitzine (My Dear F***ing Prince) or Miles Fowler (Women of the Movement) complete the cast.
