Both US Democrats and Republicans understand the challenges Latvia is facing

When the Prime Minister officially announced that diplomat Baiba Braže is being promoted to the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, she was asked to comment on the government’s future plans for building transatlantic relations with the United States. Siliņa said that the US presidential election worries the international community, but Latvia will continue working with the transatlantic partner, maintaining good relations as much as possible.

Asked about the concerns caused by the possible election of Republican Donald Trump, Siliņa emphasized that during Trump’s presidency, Latvia’s transatlantic relations with the United States were “quite active”. “I don’t have any clear signals at the moment that these relations could be broken, because there is both the NATO agreement and other agreements that are in force, which have been strengthened not only by the US president, but also by Congress,” said Silina.

The Prime Minister said that both US Democrats and Republicans understand the challenges Latvia is facing, and US politicians themselves once advocated for Latvia to join the NATO alliance. “Those people who were present and advocated for the Baltic countries to join NATO, these people are still in office today, and they confirm that they will continue to advocate for us. Since they themselves have lobbied for us to be NATO allies, they will continue to do so ,” the Prime Minister is convinced.
