Bookstores Recommend Great Stories: ‘A Time for Everything’ and ‘The Big Green Book’

The first recommendation is a book inspired by Ecclesiastes. A time for everything (Fulgencio Pimentel Editores). A Christian Demilly story illustrated by Laurent Moreau that tells us that everything has its opportune moment in life. There is a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to reap.

Teachings that Demilly shows us through the life of a couple. From their first meeting to the birth of their child. In short, an ode to the vicissitudes of our lives, where the cartoonist Laurent Moreau leaves us an exquisite work with the detail. Recommended book between 9 and 18 years old.

Another story that deserves to be read and shared as a family over and over again is The big green book (Editorial Corimbo), a masterpiece by English historian Robert Graves which illustrated none other than one of the most influential creators of contemporary literature, Maurice Sendak, the author of Where the monsters live.

We are before a spell book. And like any magic book worth its salt, it begins …: “First, draw a magic circle around you with a wooden stick, then take three deep breaths …”. Thus begins the story of Jack, a boy who lives bored with his uncles until one fine day he finds, in the attic, a dusty book full of recipes for enchantments and spells.

Explain how to become as old or young as you want, how to change the way things look or how to disappear. All the power in the world is in your hands. In this fable, the black and white images and the text go perfectly together. Sendak’s marvelous pencil leaves us with such extraordinary drawings that they make this story an imaginative tale, but also disturbing and intelligent. A book to share with children from 6 years to one hundred.

Enric Boluda, our literary tutor of the week, is in charge of the Abracadabra bookstore (General Álvarez de Castro, 5) in Barcelona. A place specialized in children’s and young people’s books, where small publishing houses and risky projects are given visibility and where, above all else, literary quality prevails.
