Book reveals, ‘Marilyn saved from overdose 6 years before dying’

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 01 – Six years before her body was discovered in the bed of her Brentwood home in 1962, Marilyn risked dying in even more squalid circumstances, from a heroin overdose. But that day she was saved by the intervention of a private detective. The story is told in a newly released biography about Fred Otash, first a Los Angeles policeman and then a private investigator, famous at the time for solving the cases of Hollywood stars. The volume, cited by the Daily Mail, is titled “The Fixer’, Moguls, Mobsters, Movie Stars, and Marilyn” by Josh Young and Manfred Westphal. An excerpt from the volume, published exclusively by the tabloid, tells the story of when it was Otash who started tracking down the well-known actress, about whom nothing had been known for days. His absence had worried the studios for which she worked quite a bit. After a series of investigations he discovered that she was staying in a dilapidated motel in Santa Barbara. Upon arrival, Otash considered raiding, but found himself faced with a dilemma. In the end, Marilyn was a grown woman, responsible for her own actions. If she wanted to hole up in a motel with some man of her liking she was free to do so. And no detective obviously had the legal right to enter her room and, essentially, take her back against her will to the movie studio. But in the end she decided to take this risk: he knew well that the studios had enormous power over their actresses, including Marilyn. And that he was certain that she would not go to the police to report him, risking a scandal that would undermine her reputation. So she knocked pretending to have a delivery. On the other side of the door a man answered. The door opened: in front of him was a heroin addict wearing a pair of boxers and behind her, lying on the bed, Monroe naked and motionless, in a fetal position. Around – the book reports – needles, syringes and other drug paraphernalia scattered around the room. After quickly checking her pulse, although she was unconscious, she was still alive. She covered her body with a sheet, cleaned everything around so as not to leave any traces and decided to put the man on a bus with a one-way ticket to San Francisco, telling him not to tell anything. In an atmosphere of great confidentiality she arranged for an ambulance to arrive for the actress who was admitted to a discreet private clinic in Hollywood, from which she left a few days later.
